June 16, ♊ G E M I N I; the third sign: The reason I chose this particular birth date is because of Ariel's personality, she is closer to Cancer than she is to Taurus, thus I wanted her birthdate to be closer to June 21th.

For the Gemini sign, Ariel demonstrates quick, youthful, versatile, charming, inquisitive, stimulating, entertaining, and lacks prejudice in her personality. She is young not only in the sense of age but also in the aspects of naivety, inexperience, and ignorance. Ariel often displays these attributes in her dealings with regulations her father puts on her, the world, and often when putting her trust in a situation that she shouldn't or people--like looking at a faulty bridge and thinking "no matter what happens, I will surely make it across!" and people that display the obvious (Disney indicated signs of villainy) shady qualities Ariel puts faith in only to be betrayed. However most of this misplacement of trust is also due to the fact that she is selfishly motivated: perhaps an object she wants is across the bridge, or she needs the help of a person to obtain something she wants.

The weaknesses of the Gemini also describe her personality and behaviors. Restless being the top weakness on the list, Ariel is always on the go, she would much rather be exploring, be active, when she is left with nothing to do she often finds plenty of mischief to get into. She loves to gossip and hear gossip: what is Sebastian's (her sidekick crab!) dream job? Is there a love affair between two mermen, what kind of ancient treasure is buried where!? Thus, gossip not necessarily in the negative terms of "bad mouthing" another, but general gossip in rumors, or fun tales in which entices at her curious nature. Ariel is also impatient, this is seen throughout her lessons with music, her father's ruling, her sister's time at the vanity. Above all I think impractical completely expresses one of her strongest weakness. To sum up: Going to an "evil" sea witch, making a contract, and thinking that she is going to come out of the deal unscathed and in fact victorious.

Suitability:

"Of Age" is relative to not only culture but time era. Such as the example of Ariel's time era, she is of age and young women are commonly married at this age if not younger. As far as her cannon speaks, she is "sixteen" but her goal is to find true love in which to keep herself human and keep Ursula's curse of ownership at bay. Naturally intimacy is hand in hand with true love, not to mention sexual exploration not only with her new body but with another human male--being her prince (in canon). Ariel is taken from when she surfaces on the shore as human, the transformation already haven taken place!

Power:

Summoning: The reason being that coming from her world she is often in swarms of fishes and sea creatures, mostly singing along happily -- but in a more "reality" sense, underwater swarms would be very comparable to aerial swarms such as the fact that they are not earth bound, something that Ariel will notice the difference in being a human -- she can no longer ride the levels of the air as she did beneath the surface on the very many different sea levels. I thought it was a significant comparison and interesting aspect for her to reflect on!

Personality:

Ariel is a fun 16 year old that is experiencing: the identity of the self, apart from the parent. Thus, instead of obeying her father, King Triton, Ariel is often mischievous and disobedient to satisfy her own curiosities and interests. Unfortunately her judgment is not the best, especially when it comes to her need to satisfy her curiosity. Often times Ariel dives into situations too quickly without first evaluating the situation or circumstance: this behavior has led her to many - many - unfortunate consequences. Ariel has gotten into trouble where her well being was threatened as well as her friend's, whomever she happened to drag along on one of her many "exploratory" adventures. Throughout the animated series (prequel to the 1989 title The Little Mermaid) she often stirs trouble and either needs rescuing or, by the skin of her teeth, finds a way out of the trouble. Some of these occurrences her father is aware of and while he sometimes comes to her rescue he offers wisdom and guidance and expresses his concern for her, however, in a short time Ariel is once again finding trouble for herself.

Ariel is incredibly kind and generous to those around her, she is definitely gullible and has poor trust values. While some of these attributes have gained her many friends, other times this behavior has gained her enemies and more trouble. Though Ariel will wise up, most times, and if scorned once by an individual will usually be much more wary of them use precaution or, all together, keep her distance. Though, gullible, if a past enemy pines for forgiveness and promises a change in their intentions, then Ariel is very open to the idea of trusting them once again (unfortunately that doesn't always pan out–– lessons someday will be learned). While on the subject of gullible, her dear friend (a seagull) Skuttle is her main link to the human world and often Ariel surfaces to ask of his infinite wisdom on man made items that have found their way down to the bottom of the ocean. Thus, whatever Skuttle finds definition for the items, is what Ariel will believe. Skuttle is a constant friend to Ariel and has stuck through some of her mischief at times, alongside her best friend Flounder, who is also a constant friend of Ariel's who is absolutely almost always involved in her explorative adventures. The two have a wonderful dynamic, where as Ariel is brave and headstrong, Flounder is often cowardly and insecure.

Onto the macabre!–– well of sorts, Ariel is not accustomed to human societies and their social rules, or their "norms", what the man-made society deems appropriate and customary, Ariel is completely unaware, naive, and ignorant to. From a man's point of view, Ariel will have terrible manners, is socially awkward all together, has very poor values, she doesn't grasp the concept of personal space, and thus forth. Body mechanics also play a really interesting part in behavior, and personality; Ariel will need to learn a few things about having a human body, such as toileting, hygiene, even swallowing drool–– as you can imagine being in the ocean your whole life what's the point of swallowing? These atrocities are an eyesore for man and some might be quick to conclude that Ariel was born special, with on top of her inability to speak. Hopefully I've painted a pretty nice perspective on her from the outside looking in. Ariel is very eager, however, to fit into the human world, as the topside has always been a passionate dream. To be able to be a part of a world you know exists, and have had the opportunities to collect fallen treasures from the world above. Music boxes, paintings, forks, etc. She may not know the meaning, or mechanics, behind each item (be it misguidance from Skuttle who gives her poor and false knowledge on her items) but each one is treasured, appreciated, and loved. That said, Ariel has a hoarding attribute to her as well.

Ariel is very persistent and devoted, once she sets her mind on something she is unbearably hard to stop or to convince her to reconsider. Thus is how she found herself in her current predicament of being human. Ariel had wariness toward the sea witch Ursula, but with the help of Ursula she was transformed into a human in order to fulfill her devoted dream to be a part of the human world and to win a man's love whom she had rescued from drowning some nights prior. Ariel does this with knowing the risks of the spell, and the consequences if she fails to earn a kiss from her true-love's lips: if she fails she belongs to Ursula–– thus Ariel is a bit of a risk taker in order to get what she wants. Which brings me to say she is selfish as well. Instead of obeying her father, staying with her sisters and friends, all of who love her, Ariel pursues this dream to leave her world for another based on new found feelings of love at first sight.

Also, because this about sums up my complete love for Ariel: "Ariel is a fully realized female character who thinks and acts independently, even rebelliously, instead of hanging around passively while the fates decide her destiny" ––Roger Ebert.

Voice. Ariel's feet dragged across the cool mushy surface, an experience she would not be able to share with her friends that helped her to the surface. Skuttle, Flounder, Sebastian--her ocean life friends that she had known for as long as she has truly known herself. Adventerous, brave, silly, mischevious, disobedient, but passionate Ariel recognized her strong qualities, her weaker ones were - at this moment - wisdom.

Her feet stopped and she looked to the water seeping up from the mud to soak her bare feet. The tattoo around her ankle stung with an unfamiliar burn as the ocean water was always much cooler than the atmosphere above the surface. Any burn she once had described beneath the surface always came behind a chilling affliction. By now her legs were covered in the texture of mud and water and from it her skin began to carry a darker color as the substance caked on to her flesh like the stickiness of filmy surface water occassionally when she surfaced or the seaweed she swam through to reach the beach.

It was unfortunate she found herself beside a statue of falling water without her friends near to explain to her what it meant. But she was fortunate to know the little she did about this human world. One of the hardest lessons she would know instantly is that humans only know one plain. That is, to move only on the ground. Rather than swim to the top to examine the strange structure that spilled water into the pool she woke beside, she could only imagine the mouth of the source. She was bound to the ground and with that she felt the weight of herself fully--

and she was heavy. No longer could she settle comfortably against the dense waters of the sea levels. The weight of this air all around her was a cool and light atmosphere that her body could not climb.

But still, these depressions aside she had her legs! She had her feet, with those particular awkward looking -- toes. Even if she was no longer weightless, no longer able to swim toward the sun, or fall gracefully to the seabed she was able to walk the lands, lay on the beach, and seek her true place amongst the humans with her prince or if he is not here, then he who would be her true love. Ursula had given her enough example of how to speak without her voice, the languages of looks, movement, and touch.

But alas, there is that letter which described the reason she was here and she hoped it was more for the past than any future endeavors that had to do with it. Because now she faced this world alone without her voice.
